Why Special Schools Struggle With Sports (And It’s Not Laziness)

Most people assume special schools don’t focus on sports because they don’t care enough.

That assumption is wrong.

The truth is more uncomfortable.

Most special schools struggle with sports because:

  • teachers are scared of injuries
  • staff aren’t trained in adaptive movement
  • there’s no structured curriculum
  • space is limited
  • expectations are low

Many educators want to do more — they just don’t know how.

When a child has balance issues or sensory challenges, movement feels risky.
So schools choose safety over opportunity.

But here’s what we’ve seen repeatedly:
When sports is structured properly, behaviour improves.
Attention improves.
Confidence improves.

The problem isn’t effort.
It’s lack of support and training.

And until we fix that, children will continue sitting on benches while life passes them by.
