School Infrastructure
Partly plannedBetter spaces for children across Maharashtra.
Children with intellectual and developmental disabilities need safe, suitable places to play, learn and receive support. S4UA provides sports equipment and practical improvements to partner schools today, and is planning larger facilities for rural and tribal communities.

The programme at a glance
The need, what we do and how you can help.
A quick summary of the programme. Part of this work is under way today and part is still being planned, and we say clearly which is which.
Without safe spaces and basic equipment, schools cannot run regular sport, however willing their staff. Rural and tribal areas have the fewest facilities.
- Now: assess school spaces and provide sports equipment
- Now: small improvements so sessions run safely
- Planned: larger sports and residential facilities
Partner schools in Mumbai, Thane and Palghar. Sites for larger facilities are being explored in rural and tribal districts.
Equipment and school-space support is under way. Larger facilities depend on sites, partners, permissions and resources, and none is complete yet.
Sports equipment for partner schools. 30+ special schools have received sports equipment so they can run regular sessions on their own grounds. See the example

- Support a school space upgrade

Why suitable spaces matter
Opportunity needs a place to grow.
Suitable places to play, learn and receive support can help schools create more opportunities for children. The right space is one that fits the school and the activities it plans.
- 01
Access to appropriate spaces
Places where children can take part regularly, close to where they learn.
- 02
What the school needs
Each setting is different, so improvements start with the school's own situation.
- 03
Suitable equipment and facilities
Matched to the activities the school actually plans to run.
- 04
The wider school community
Staff and families who help a space stay useful over time.
A better space does not guarantee participation or particular outcomes. It is one part of the support around children.
Starting with what a school needs
Every school starts from a different place.
S4UA begins by understanding the school and identifying what would genuinely be useful. Different schools may need different forms of support.
- 01
Sports spaces
An equipped sports area, or improvements to existing school facilities that make regular practice more practical.
- 02
Sensory and therapy spaces
Suitable rooms for guided sensory activities and professional-led therapy, with appropriate equipment, staff guidance and a plan for continued use.

Learning and daily-activity spaces
Improvements to the spaces schools use for learning and everyday activities, where there is a clear need.
There is no standard package. Not every school needs, or receives, every type of support.
Sports facilities
More opportunities to practise, closer to school.
S4UA aims to improve access to spaces where children can practise sports regularly. Children need suitable places to practise, alongside support from school teams and coaches.
- 01Strengthening facilities within schools
- 02Developing shared opportunities for schools in a district
Equipment support within schools is under way. Shared district facilities are still being planned, and facilities are improved only where there is a clear need and a practical way to help.
In practice
What this looks like in a school.
Sports equipment for partner schools
Mumbai, Thane and Palghar OngoingS4UA visits each partner school, looks at the space it has and the activities it wants to run, then provides the sports equipment needed for regular sessions.
With the right equipment on site, school staff and trained coaches can run sport every week instead of waiting for an outside event.
A shared sports facility
Rural and tribal districts PlannedEarly discussions with local partners about a sports space that several special schools could share. No site has been confirmed yet.
Sun Petro and TTEC help provide sports equipment to our partner schools.

Sensory, therapy and learning environments
Spaces shaped around the needs of the school.
Some schools may need a suitable sensory or therapy room. Others may need better spaces for learning and daily activities. The intended use of a space shapes what it should be.
Sensory and therapy rooms
S4UA has supported sensory rooms in four schools so far and wants to help more. These projects need:
- Appropriate equipment
- Staff guidance
- A plan for continued use
Learning and daily-activity spaces
Where there is a clear need, improvements to the rooms and areas a school uses every day can make those activities more practical for children and staff.
Therapy activities are guided and delivered by qualified professionals. S4UA helps schools create suitable spaces; it does not provide clinical treatment.
Planning for what may be needed next.
S4UA's longer-term plans include larger facilities, where the need and local arrangements support them.
These projects are at the development stage.
Larger facilities for the future
- Dedicated sports facilitiesSpaces where children can practise and take part in sport.
- Residential special-school infrastructureWhere the need and local arrangements support it.
Before anything is built
- 01Suitable sites
- 02Permissions
- 03A clear plan for daily operations
- 04Appropriate local arrangements
Working with local partners
Good infrastructure starts with local understanding.
S4UA welcomes schools, local organisations and supporters who can help:
- 01Identify needs
- 02Understand the school and community setting
- 03Develop practical projects
- 04Support the continued use of facilities
The aim is to create facilities that serve children and the school community over time.
Our aim
Working towards better access across Maharashtra.
S4UA's infrastructure vision includes rural and tribal areas. Our aim is to reach every tribal area of Maharashtra, with support that reflects each school and community.
A future ambition
Reaching every tribal area is something we are working towards. S4UA does not yet work in every area.
Shaped by local needs
Support depends on what each school needs and on practical local arrangements.
Built with local partners
We want to work with local partners to identify and develop suitable projects.
How you can help
Three practical ways to support this programme.
Some support makes a difference in a school straight away. Some helps us build the larger facilities children will need in future.
- 01
Fund sports equipment
Help a partner school get the equipment it needs to run sport every week.
Donate - 02
Support a space upgrade
Fund practical improvements that make a school's grounds or rooms safer and more usable.
Become a partner - 03
Partner on a larger facility
Help us find sites, permissions and resources for shared sports or residential facilities.

Start a conversation
Help create spaces where more opportunities can begin.
If your school has a practical infrastructure need, or your organisation would like to help develop a suitable space, we would be glad to talk it through. Not every proposal can be funded or delivered, but every conversation helps us understand where support is needed.
You can also explore other ways to get involved.
