Our impact
Nine years of work, measured in schools, coaches and children.
Since 2017, S4UA has worked with special schools across Maharashtra so that children with intellectual and developmental disabilities can play sport regularly, with trained coaches, the right equipment and suitable spaces. This page shows what that work has reached so far, what is happening now, and what has changed for the schools and children involved.
- Reporting period: 2017 to 2026
- Figures updated October 2026
The evidence
What the work has reached, and what is happening now.
We separate two kinds of figures: the total reach of our work since 2017, and the activity running in the current school year.
Cumulative reach
2017 to 2026Every school, child and coach counted once, across all years of S4UA's work.
- 45+
special schools reached
- 2,000+
children supported
- 60+
coaches and teacher-coaches trained
- 30+
schools given sports equipment
- 25+
sports events and meets organised
- 3
sensory rooms completed, with a fourth in progress
Current activity
2025 to 2026 school yearWork running this school year. These figures are part of the cumulative totals above, not in addition to them.
- 18schools running regular sports sessions
- 450+children taking part each week
- 20coaches and teacher-coaches currently active
- 2projects under way: a sensory room in Ulhasnagar and a skills pilot in Dhule
Figures come from S4UA's programme records and school reports. They describe reach and activity, not the outcome of any single programme, campaign or donation.
Stories of progress
What progress looks like in a school, a district and a child's life.
Three examples of what changed, told through where things started, what S4UA did and where things stand now.
Umang Special School
Ghatkopar, Mumbai- Before
- Therapy sessions ran in a corner of a shared classroom, with very little equipment.
- What S4UA did
- Helped plan and equip a dedicated sensory and therapy room, with Muthoot's support.
- Now
- The school's therapists run guided sessions in the room three times a week.
Special schools in Dhule
Dhule district- Before
- Few special schools in the district ran regular sport, and most had no trained coach on staff.
- What S4UA did
- Trained teacher-coaches from 15 schools and set up district coaching support, with Ajmera's support.
- Now
- All 15 schools hold weekly sports sessions led by their own staff.
Aarav, 14
Thane district (name changed)- Before
- Aarav found group activities difficult and rarely joined in at school.
- What S4UA did
- His school's teacher-coach, trained by S4UA, brought him into weekly athletics sessions.
- Now
- He trains twice a week and won silver in the 50m at the S4UA inter-school sports meet.
Stories are shared with the permission of the schools and families involved. Children's names are changed to protect their privacy.

S4UA aims to reach every tribal area of Maharashtra. This is an ambition we are working towards, not current coverage.

The next chapter
There is more work to do. And more possibility to create.
45+ schools reached is a start. Many special schools in Maharashtra still have no regular sport, no trained coach and no suitable space. A great deal of work has begun. Many barriers remain.
You can be part of what comes next: by learning more about the work, supporting it, exploring a partnership or introducing S4UA to others who believe every child deserves to take part.
Take the next step
Help create more opportunities to play, learn and grow.
